Dr. Lie-Fen Shyur’s research direction is to identify active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from Formosan herbal plants that have concrete potential for further development into functional botanical supplements or botanical drugs for human or animal health care. Shyur laboratory established systems biology-based omics approaches to demonstrate the polypharmacology of phytomedicines and their derived APIs that combat cancer diseases, such as cutaneous melanoma or triple-negative breast cancer. The plant-based API, effective in preventing aging-associated disorders, such as sarcopenia, neuroinflammation, and/or cognitive impairment via regulating the brain-gut-muscle axis, is also the current research highlight. The long-term goal of the Shyur laboratory’s studies is to transform medicinal plants into premium, value-added, and health & evidence-oriented herbal supplements or botanical drugs. The integrated, multi-disciplinary research is not only for establishing sustainable agriculture of Formosan herbal plants, but also aims to provide technological platforms for strengthening the competitiveness of the Taiwan biotech industry in botanical drug or botanical supplement development.
