IRT3 is a Zn-regulated plasma membrane Zn and Fe transporter

An in-depth molecular characterization of Zn-regulated transporters was performed. We found that Arabidopsis IRT3 is a Zn-regulated and plasma membrane-localized Zn/Fe transporter. By overexpressing IRT3, Fe accumulation is increased. These data imply that the expression of ZIP transporters in the hyperaccumulator A. halleri may also be involved in Fe homeostasis under Zn-excess conditions.
