Apoptosis-inducing polypeptides.

Using a novel approach, we have expressed and generated aqueous-soluble recombinant E. coli derived VP1 (rVP1) of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). We have found that rVP1 of FMDV causes apoptosis of human cancer by binding to cellular integrins through its RGD motif and modulating Akt signaling pathway. rVP1 is 1,000 fold more potent than most RGD containing oligopeptides. It induces apoptosis of a variety of cancer cells including those of breast, prostate, lung, colorectal, leukemia, β lymphoma and ovary.
