2019/11/11 ABRC Seminar

Speaker: Dr. Charles Brearley (Professor of Biochemistry, School of Biological Sciences, University of East Anglia, UK)
Topic:The enzymology and structural biology of phytate biosynthesis and turnover

Inositol hexakisphosphate, InsP6, or phytate, as metal-ion salt, is the most abundant inositol phosphate in nature and a major form of organic phosphate in soil. It has been estimated that the accumulation of phosphate as phytate in the cropped storage organs of plants is more or less equal to worldwide application of rock phosphate fertilizer to agricultural soils. The Brearley laboratory has been interested in the metabolic pathways by which phytate is synthesized, metabolized, and otherwise employed in plants. This seminar will discuss current understanding of the enzymology of phyate synthesis and turnover in plants, with reference to the structural biology of important contributors to these processes.
